On Monday, the MLB trade deadline came to a close, and one of the teams with the most on the line was the Texas Rangers. The Rangers came into the deadline making everyone available and the ability to shake up the playoff race. Many analysts said the Rangers held “the keys to the world series.” The biggest players the Rangers had to offer were all-star outfielder Joey Gallo and Cy Young award front runner Lance Lynn.

Teams called and made offers to the Rangers for each of them, but the Rangers never took an offer. Offers came in from major World Series contenders like the Yankees, Dodgers, Padres, Rays, and a couple others. The Padres were front runners to acquire both Gallo and Lynn but chose to go after other pieces such as Indians’ ace Mike Clevinger. There were also talks of the Rangers moving fan-favorite second baseman Rougned Odor in order to make some room to go after big free agents this offseason.

However, once the 3 PM deadline hit, the Rangers were only able to get two trade deals done. The first of which came when the Rangers dealt left-handed pitcher Mike Minor, who is coming off a great year but is off to a rough start, for Oakland Athletics prospects Marcus Smith and Dustin Harris. The Rangers second and final trade came when the Rangers dealt third baseman Todd Frazier and catcher Robinson Chirinos to the New York Mets. What the Rangers received in the trade is still yet to be known. However, the move was made before the 3 PM deadline, so both players will no longer be on the team. The movement of Todd Frazier will allow the Rangers to move some guys around the infield or potentially call up on of their top prospects, Josh Jung. The Rangers were not able to move neither Gallo nor Lynn by the deadline, which could possibly hurt the Rangers in the long run since the return for them will be much lower as many teams will be able to fill in the gaps when the off-season rolls around.
