This year has been great so far for the Waxahachie High School tennis team. After winning the district championships, they are now gearing up for the area playoffs on Friday, October 11, 9:30 am at Corsicana High School.
Bailey Alford, who has been playing for five years, shared her motivation: “I just really enjoy playing.” With her dad also being a coach, she finds extra inspiration to give her best. On match days, she focuses on mental preparation, saying, “I have to prepare myself mentally, knowing anything could happen.” Her proudest moment this season was winning the district championship against Mesquite—especially since it was the team’s first title in years!
Lucas Janssen, a player since seventh grade, feels similarly motivated. “My love for the sport motivates me,” he said. He understands the mental challenges of tennis, admitting, “It’s very hard to overcome.” His strategy on match days? “Just go and don’t think too much about it.” His simple preparation routine to stay focused.
Emerson Medford, who has played for ten years, finds joy in every match. “It has become one of my favorite things,” she noted. Her preparation includes staying hydrated since the Texas heat can be a challenge. The district championship win was particularly special to her “It was also senior night so it was a super meaningful and amazing night for our team”
What unites these players is their passion for tennis and their determination to overcome challenges. They all emphasize the importance of mental preparation and the support they find in each other as teammates. Their love for the sport drives them to improve and succeed.
The dedication and hard work has played off immensely for this team. Setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead, this season will be one for the books!
