Cheer Tryouts

Cheer+Tryouts

A new year. A new coach. A new team. WHS cheer tryouts were held April 8. There was a lot of shock and disappointment, but mostly cheers of joy. A total of 33 girls tried out in hopes of making the varsity team. Out of the 33, 17 girls made the varsity cheer team along with two mascots. Nine returning squad members made it as well as one new junior and seven sophomores. The new team has a lot of talent and skill.

The cheer program will also have a new head coach. Erica Fritz will step up to be the head coach of the program. Last season, she was the JV cheer coach. Fritz holds high expectations for her team and is excited to be the varsity head coach this season. The team may start competing in UIL cheer competitions, and Fritz is ready to coach a winning team.

The new freshman and JV teams hold a lot of promise as well. Both teams consist of nine members each. All three squads will attend cheer camp this August to prepare for the 2016-17 cheer season. The team has their first new squad practice Wednesday, April 20. It will be an exciting start to a new season.

“I’m so stoked to cheer under the Friday Night Lights this upcoming season. I can’t wait to see what this next year has in store for me and my friends,” said new varsity member, Madey Betts.
