Tennis has Successful Start to Season

The Waxahachie Tennis team is having a great fall season. In district play, the varsity team has won against the following schools so far: Cedar Hill 17-2, Desoto 19-0, and Duncanville 12-7.

“We’re 9-3 overall, 3-2 in district, and tennis has clinched a playoff spot for the 4th consecutive year,” head coach Nicholas Tanner said.

Recently, the varsity tennis team lost against Mansfield Legacy in a close district match, with the score being 9-10.

“Mansfield Legacy was a tough loss, but I am really proud of our team because they played the best they have all season long,” Tanner said.

The line one girls’ doubles team had a major comeback during their match against Legacy.

“We lost the first set in a tiebreaker and we were down 0-5 in the second set,” sophomore Emerson Medford said. “We then won seven games in a row to beat Legacy in the second set.”

“Even though we lost against them in the final tiebreaker, I was very proud of how we played,” freshman Lleanna Bounds said.

The line three boys’ doubles team also had a nerve-wracking recovery against the opposing team.

“Not going to lie, I thought we were going to lose,” senior Angel Garcia admitted. “We lost the first set 6-1, and we were down in the second set. But, we came back and won that second set in a tiebreaker,” he explained. “Then we were down 2-9 in the super-breaker, and came back by winning nine consecutive points to win that super 11-9.”

“We were losing pretty badly, but we kept our determination and never gave up, which ultimately led to our victory,”Grayson Armstrong said.

The junior varsity team has been doing just as well as the varsity team this season. JV is currently undefeated in district play, with only three matches left to go.

“Tennis is dominating this fall season, and we’re looking forward to playoffs and continuing the success as we transition into the spring,” Tanner concluded.
