Despite quarterback Campbell Sullivan’s 159 all-purpose yards, Lumpkins Stadium was stunned into silence Friday night as the Ennis Lions triumphed over the Waxahachie Indians 21-13 in the 98th Battle of 287.

Waxahachie would get off to a poor start, with senior Josh Sterns reaggravating an injured ankle on the game’s first play. The Indians still managed to strike first on a Crisanto Perez field goal, but Darion Beasley would put Ennis up on the first of his two touchdown runs. The Lions would lead the contest 14-6 at halftime, holding the Indians out of the end zone.

The Tribe would eventually hit pay dirt in the second half, but Ennis had done enough damage to reclaim the 287 sign, bringing the overall rivalry record to 48-48-2.

Waxahachie (0-1) welcomes the Mesquite Poteet Pirates (0-1) to Lumpkins Stadium on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm, and the game can be heard on KBEC radio.
