After a tough-season opening loss, the Waxahachie Indians bounced back in dramatic fashion on Friday, triumphing over the Mesquite Poteet Pirates 53-46.

Poteet would race out to an early lead behind strong play from quarterback Steven Fink and wideout Tristan Golightly, taking a 22-point lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Poteet was set to take an insurmountable lead after a Waxahachie muffed kick return, but Preston Hodge scooped up a blocked PAT to defibrillate the Indian offense.

“It shifted the momentum,” Indian quarterback Campbell Sullivan told the Waxahachie Daily Light. “We knew we had it the whole time. We worked all week for this. We knew we had it in us.”

The Tribe would hold the Pirates to only one more score, and they would complete the comeback when Campbell Sullivan found BJ Hawkins with 5:27 left in the game. Crisanto Perez would chip in a field goal to set the margin of victory, and Quincy Johnson would seal the deal on an interception with 1:26 remaining.

Waxahachie (1-1) travels to Flower Mound on Friday to take on the Marcus Marauders (1-1). Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm, and the game can be heard on KBEC 1390 AM/99.1 FM.
