Starting right in the trauma-induced dream of female protagonist Tessa Dickinson, self-published author and youtuber, Abbie Emmons, immerses the reader into the despair and pain of the temporarily blinded 16-year-old. The author tells the story of overcoming your disposition and “punching life back in the face.”

The 16-year-old blogger and homeschooler, Tessa Dickinson, recently got in a drunk driver accident and sentenced to “100 days of darkness,” making her grandparents put out an ad for a typist. The respondent of said ad is the male protagonist, Weston Ludovico. This sets the stage for the split-perspective novel, with Weston telling the story of him overcoming his loss of everything below the knee and Tessa realizing (with the persistent help of Weston), there is more to life than sight.

Due to the embarrassment of her misfortunes, Tessa refuses Weston’s help. Weston lost his legs three and a half years prior to a bad infection in an untreated, stupid, stunt wound. Now he finds relief in the “volcano” of Tessa and the fact that he is being treated like a normal person, paving the way for their enemies-to-lovers story.

Whether it’s playing a song on his ukulele, taking her to a bookstore, bringing her flowers, or taking her to a theme park, Weston is determined to help Tessa realize her other four senses.

Questions keep being asked, such a whether or not he is doing this to help her, or is there more? Even if Weston has feelings for Tessa, does she feel the same about him? Is their relationship only platonic? If not, would Tessa love Weston once she finds out his secret? Will this connection matter later or is it just a summer fling?
