Christiane Amanpour is world-renowned British-Iranian journalist recognized for her fearless and impactful reporting from the warzones for more than four decades.

Amanpour was born on January 12, 1958 in London. She spent her first 11 years of life living in Tehran, Iran experiencing a privileged life under the Shah. Soon after she turned 11, she was sent to boarding school in England first to the Convent of the Holy Cross and then New Hall School. Later, she returned to Iran after high school but the 1979 Islamic Revolution led her to witness the effects of the revolution on her family and friends, including the rapid imposition of strict social rules such as mandatory hijab and the suppression of secular and liberal voices.

This experience exposed her to the conflicts between cultural conservatives and reformers that continue to shape Iranian society today and forced her family to flee back to England. She moved to the United States to study journalism at the University of Rhode Island, graduating with high honors in 1983. She began her career as an assistant at CNN’s foreign desk.

Christiane Amanpour’s first major breakthrough came with her extensive and vivid reporting from the Persian Gulf War (1990-1991), where her on-the-ground presence inside Iraq and Saudi Arabia brought her widespread recognition, establishing her as CNN’s premier international correspondent covering major global conflicts. Following this, her subsequent award-winning coverage of the Bosnian War (early 1990s), including broadcasts from besieged Sarajevo, further cemented her reputation and defined her career in war reporting.

Christiane Amanpour’s second major contribution involves her pioneering, tenacious reporting from global conflict zones (like Bosnia, Iraq, Rwanda) and securing exclusive, high-stakes interviews with world leaders (Gadhafi, Mubarak, Karzai) during pivotal moments, challenging traditional neutrality by exposing human rights abuses, and shaping international narratives through her uncompromising pursuit of truth. This reporting earned her numerous awards and honorary
citizenship for her bravery.
